Do ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Gemini train on your chats? (Australia, checked monthly)
Checked: 25 October 2026. The question small businesses ask most about AI: will what I type in be used for training? Here are the four big ones, personal accounts and business plans separately, each with the official page. These switches move and get renamed, so we check them against the official pages every month and note what changed at the bottom.

Does each AI train on your chats?
“Not confirmed” means we couldn’t find it on the company’s own pages on that date. We don’t guess.
| Tool | Personal account | Where to turn it off | Business plans |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT [1] | Yes, by default | Settings → Data controls → “Improve the model for everyone” | Business and Enterprise: not by default |
| Claude [2] [3] [4] | You choose when you sign up | Settings → Privacy → “Help improve our AI models” | Team, Enterprise and API: not by default |
| Copilot [5] [6] [7] | Older app: yes, by default (Australia isn’t one of the exceptions Microsoft lists). New app (from 18 Aug 2026): not confirmed (25 Oct 2026); Microsoft’s privacy pages for the new app don’t mention training | Older app: Settings → Privacy → “Training on conversation activity”. New app: not confirmed (25 Oct 2026) | Signed in with a work or school (Entra ID) account: no. Copilot inside Microsoft 365 Personal or Family apps: no |
| Gemini [8] [9] | Yes, while “Keep activity” is on | Gemini Apps Activity → turn off “Keep activity” | Google Workspace: not by default |
Three things to know
- Turning a switch off usually covers future chats only. Microsoft: “Opting out will exclude your future conversations from being used for training these AI models.” [5]
- “Not used for training” isn’t the same as “nobody can see it”. Microsoft, for one, says opting out doesn’t stop your chats being used for “advertising, digital safety, security, and compliance purposes”. [6] Client information belongs in a business plan, or nowhere.
- The OAIC recommends that you “do not enter personal information, and particularly sensitive information, into publicly available generative AI tools”. [10]
