AI bookkeeping in Xero and MYOB: what it does, what it costs, and what still needs a person
As of 23 October 2026, Xero and MYOB offer AI for transaction matching, business questions and BAS preparation. For a Melbourne small business owner, the useful question is what the software prepares and what a person still has to check. MYOB AI BAS cannot lodge your BAS; using AI does not transfer your responsibility to the software. [1] [4] [5] [10]

What the AI can do now
Xero: JAX (“Just Ask Xero”) includes AI capture, AI Automate and AI Insights. Xero says AI Automate categorises transactions and runs bank reconciliation in the background, logging its actions. JAX answers plain-language questions using your Xero data. Automatic reconciliation happens only when JAX is highly confident; otherwise it suggests a match and leaves the line for you to review. Automation can be switched on or off per bank account. Xero says JAX does not replace your accountant. [1] [2]
MYOB: Ask Iris answers financial and business questions. Smart Reconciliation (BETA) matches transactions automatically. AI BAS (BETA) helps prepare BAS during the quarter, surfacing missing documents and GST issues. Its stated scope is simple, quarterly, cash-based BAS covering G1, 1A and 1B, plus PAYG withholding W1/W2 for employing businesses. MYOB warns that AI BAS can produce incorrect information. [4] [5]
What still needs the owner or a registered BAS agent
- Routine bookkeeping: TPB(GS) 43 says data entry, coding to instructions, processing payments and preparing bank reconciliations are not BAS services, whether manual or automated, because they do not require interpreting or applying a BAS provision. [7]
- Tax judgement: working out GST treatment, determining a client’s default GST codes and establishing the figures for a BAS are BAS services. Someone providing BAS services for a fee or reward must be TPB-registered unless an exemption applies. What counts is the task, not whether a person or software does it. [7] [8]
- Review and lodgement: MYOB AI BAS cannot lodge. The owner or BAS agent reviews the figures, enters them into the relevant ATO or agent portal and lodges. MYOB says it is not a registered tax or BAS agent. [5]
- Responsibility: the ATO says taxpayers remain accountable for accurate information even when AI helped prepare it. MYOB also leaves accuracy and compliance with the owner. TPB says AI output is a starting point only; business.gov.au warns there is no protection when using an unregistered tax or BAS agent. [5] [9] [10] [12]
Compare the BAS figures with your records. The ATO says most business records must be kept for five years, generally from when they were prepared or obtained, or the related transaction was completed, whichever is later. [11] [12]
What Xero costs
Prices read as of 23 October 2026, in AUD and including GST: Grow is usually $78/month and Comprehensive $107/month. Automatic bank reconciliation is included with Grow, Comprehensive and Ultimate; Ignite offers AI Automate as an $8.00/month add-on to the base plan. [1] [2] [3]
The new-customer offer is 90% off the base subscription for the first three months, then regular pricing applies. It ends at 11:59pm AEDT on 2 November 2026. [3]
What MYOB costs
Prices read as of 23 October 2026, in AUD: after their offer periods, Lite is $315/year and Pro $70/month. AI BAS is an additional purchase on Lite and Pro. From year two, published monthly AI BAS tiers are $25, $40 or $70 for non-employing businesses and $30, $45 or $75 for employing businesses, based on BAS transaction volume. [4] [5]
Eligible new and returning Australian customers can get AI BAS with unlimited transactions for $25/month for 12 months, plus 80% off an initial 12-month Lite or Pro base subscription. This bundle offer ends 15 January 2027, unless varied. MYOB’s staff FAQ says AI BAS requires a 12-month commitment, cancellation bills the remaining commitment, and there is no general free trial at launch. [4] [6]
AccountRight: MYOB’s pages say different things
The pricing table shows a dash for AI BAS on AccountRight Plus. MYOB’s FAQ material says AI BAS is not currently available for AccountRight customers, but also says it becomes available from October 2026 and refers to AccountRight in the browser. These statements disagree. Check with MYOB before relying on availability for your AccountRight subscription. [4] [5] [6]
What not to paste into ChatGPT
The ATO says not to share personal information with AI, including names, tax file numbers, bank details, phone numbers and addresses. OAIC recommends keeping personal information, especially sensitive information, out of public AI chatbots. Do not paste bookkeeping documents containing those details into ChatGPT. Tax practitioners also need client permission before disclosing client information to AI tools. [13] [14] [9]
Questions
Can MYOB AI BAS lodge my BAS?
No. It helps prepare figures; you or your BAS agent review and lodge them through the relevant portal. [5]
Does Xero reconcile my bank automatically on every plan?
It is included with Grow, Comprehensive and Ultimate, and is a paid add-on on Ignite. Uncertain transactions still need your review. [2]
Do I still need a BAS agent if I use AI?
AI does not change the rules. Data entry and bank reconciliation are not BAS services, even when automated. Working out GST or setting up GST codes for someone else for a fee needs a TPB-registered agent, unless an exemption applies. You or your BAS agent still lodge. [7] [8] [5]
Can I use MYOB AI BAS with AccountRight?
MYOB’s pages disagree about availability. Ask MYOB to confirm for your subscription. [4] [5] [6]
